The Cowichan District Hospital Foundation was established in 1984 as a registered charity for the purpose of raising funds to purchase equipment and support patient/resident care and comfort at Cowichan District Hospital and Cairnsmore Place.
A Fast Track area in Emergency will provide a specific area to treat the lower acuity patients so that they can be cared for more promptly.
By constructing a new space within ER and with medical equipment to support the patients and attending medical staff, the hospital is confident it can:
Provide a quicker high quality "response" service for the lower acuity patients that currently wait in triage while the ER staff are occupied with the higher acuity patients
Reduce congestion in ER for all patients, and
Overall enhance the ER experience for all patients.
This set up and approach has been successfully implemented in many ER's across North America and will be a first for community hospitals in Island Health. The Fast Track solution will also allow improvements to staffing in the ER and the Seclusion Rooms.The cost of this project is approximately $50,000 - money we believe is well spent to signifcantly improve patient care in Emergency at our Community Hospital. With the community's support the hospital hopes to have this new service up and running by the New Year !

April 2010 Cowichan District Hospital Foundation established a new fund and dedicated $1 million dollars for a new community hospital, recognizing the existing hospital is straining to adequately serve our growing and aging population. Since then another $379,000 has been added to the New Hospital Building Fund with fundraising events, community donations and bequests. Additionally, the Foundation continues to commit 20 percent of annual unrestricted donations and the net amount of fundraising events to this fund until a new facility is built.
Your donations to this fund are tax deductible and help demonstrate the urgency of a new hospital to the Provincial government as well as reduce the regional district's funding requirements for the new hospital.
